A Photographer, a Surfer, an Adventurer, an Italian and Australian citizen. But more than anything, a True Friend.
We met in Sydney in April 2009, 10 years after the last time we met. I mentioned our project in Sri Lanka to him while we were having churrasco. At that time he was planning a long trip around South East Asia to go surfing. When I asked him if he wanted to come and meet us in Thirukkovil, he replied that he would love to.
I initially thought it was the kind of answer that we sometimes give…It was not.
I saw him arriving at the place in which we were staying in Haputale (a forgotten small village in the middle of a random tea plantation) on a Tuk Tuk at 5 am of August 12th. It was Marco, with a backpack and his surfboard.
In order to be on site with us on that day, he included Sri Lanka in his 6 month long trip and he took a 9 hour train ride with a third class ticket from Colombo (something that resembles the industrial revolution era).
On the day of the ceremony he spent more than 3 hours in the village taking pictures of everyone and everything. Thanks to him we now have some wonderful pictures from one of the best days of our lives.
The following day we had lunch together, then we said goodbye knowing that we would be meeting somewhere else soon.
He has given us a beautiful gift, and he did it with a smile on his face - The Best.
Thank you Marchino!
